THE MODEL STAGE. 125 Other and more complicated designs than those we have givenwill doubtless present themselves to the minds of our young readers,and we trust that the really pretty effects which can be obtained inthese artificial fireworks will tempt them to lay aside the use of theperhaps more lively, but certainly dangerous, real ones.

To possess a model stage with a complete set of characters andscenes, is doubtless the aim of many a lad into whose hands this bookwill fall. A few practical hints upon getting up a stage will not,therefore, be out of place in this section, which treats of juvenileshows. Having decided on the play you intend to represent, you maypurchase the characters, which are sold in sheets at almost all thesmaller toy-shops, and at many booksellers. After painting the sheetsin water-colours, they are to be stuck on cardboard with paste orgum, and when dry you must carefully cut out each character with asharp penknife. In painting the same characters in different atti-tudes, be careful to make use of the same colours, as nothing can bemore absurd than to make a figure change the colour of its coat,every time it kneels, sits, or draws its sword. When all the charac-ters have been prepared, the scenes, side-wings, and drop-pieces maybe purchased; these you must paint in their natural colours, andthe
